THE WEATHER

Generally the weather in South Dakota is comfortably mild during the hunting season with temperatures ranging around 30-40 in the morning to highs ranging from about 50 to 70 degrees during the day. However, temperatures ranging from 0 to 80 can occur and hunters must be prepared for those occasions where extremes can and do occur.

CLOTHING

We recommend dressing in layers as the start of the hunt could be cool/cold and increasing temperatures throughout the day, coupled with brisk walking generates plenty of warmth.

TYPICAL DRESS/GEAR TO BRING:

1. Waterproof outer hunting gear is always a good idea.
2. Hunting Boots and Socks
3. Hunting Pants (Walking through brushy areas is not uncommon)
4. Hunting Jacket with Game Vest (or Separate Game Vest)
5. Gloves (regular and warm) for mid-to-late season hunting.
6. Casual comfortable clothing for lodge and evenings out.
7. Protective Eyewear
8. Camera and Film

NOTE: BLAZE ORANGE HATS (PROVIDED BY LODGE) AND BLAZE ORANGE ON OUTER HUNTING GEAR (JACKET OR GAME VEST) IS MANDATORY).

RECOMMENDED GUNS AND SHELLS

NOTE: HARD SIDED GUN CASES WITH LOCKS ARE REQUIRED FOR TRANSPORTING GUNS ON ALL COMMERCIAL AIRLINE FLIGHTS.

Most types of shotguns are suitable for this kind of hunting. 12-Gauge shotguns are preferred by most hunters as shooting distances can vary throughout each hunt and from the beginning to end of the season as the birds get more wary. For patient hunters willing to be a little more selective with their shots, 20-gauge shotguns are perfectly acceptable as ample opportunities generally exist for the hunter to fill their limit.

CHOKES:

- Bring different chokes if your gun is easily changeable
- Modified barrels/chokes are used most commonly

SHELLS:

- 2 ¾ inch shells are most commonly used
- We recommend #4, #5 or #6 shot shells. All are effective. (Lead shot is permitted and most commonly used)
- Magnum load shells are not required and not commonly used.

NOTE: Ammunition or specialty clothing can be obtained a Cabellas. A new Cabellas store is now open in Mitchell, S.D. – 45 minute drive from the Lodge.

DOGS

Hunters are welcome to bring their dogs. Labs are the preferred hunting dog due to their ability to flush and retrieve downed birds. They are also effective in the dense brush, very tall grass and grain fields that are often encountered during the hunts.

We asked that the dogs be well trained as they will encounter a tremendous abundance of birds and bird scent. The primary function of dogs is to retrieve downed and wounded birds. Long range pointing dogs and other dogs that are not trained to stay close at hand will only excite and flush these wild and wily birds prematurely making the hunt much more difficult for everyone else. Hunters who bring dogs should plan on bringing a portable kennel as dogs are not allowed in the lodge.
