The Weather:

Seleno Day 3 '05 100Generally the weather in SD is comfortably mild during the hunting season with temperatures rangingADDISON GRP 2013 (7) around 30-40 degrees in the morning to highs ranging from about 50-70 degrees during the day. However, temperatures ranging from 0 to 80 degrees can occur and hunters must be prepared for those occasions where extremes can and do occur.

Clothing:

Dressing in layers is recommended as the start of the hunt could be cool/cold with increasing temperatures throughout the day. In addition, brisk walking through ‘gnarly’ areas will generally generate plenty of warmth.

Typical dress / gear to bring:

  • Waterproof outer hunting gear is always a good ideaBRIAN C STEVE W '02 NC 004
  • Waterproof boots and appropriate socks
  • Hunting pants for walking through brushy/weedy areas
  • Hunting jacket with game vest (Must have hunter orange on shoulders)
  • Gloves (regular and warm) for mid-to-late season hunting.  Gloves must be suitable for handling shotguns in a secure and safe manner.
  • Casual and comfortable clothing for Lodge and evening events.
  • Protective eye-wear
  • Camera and film for those enthusiasts. Ample pictures of the outing are general taken and made available to the participants. For those who would like a copy of the album prior to the departure, it is recommended that you bring a usb Storage device for downloading pictures.
  • Guests should plan to bring their favorite beverages.

Dogs:

Hunters are welcome to bring their own dogs. Inside/Outside kennels are available to accommodatedog approximately 4 dogs (based on a 1/dog per kennel basis).  Dogs are not allowed in the lodge or other facilities.

Labs are the preferred hunting dog as the primary function is to retrieve down and wounded birds. They are most effective in dense brush, very tall grass and grain fields.

IMG_1018Dogs must be trained to remain close at hand as long range pointing dogs and runners excite and flush the wild and wily birds prematurely making the hunt much more difficult for the team.

Recommended guns & ammo:

NOTE: Hard sided gun cases with locks are required for transporting guns on all commercial airline flights.

Most types of shotguns are suitable for your hunt at LaGoDa Wings. Twelve (12) gauge shotguns are preferred by most hunters as these guns are most effective at somewhat longer shots with the power to down these tough birds. For patient hunters willing to be a little more selective with their shots, 20-gauge shotguns are perfectly acceptable as ample opportunitSD 172ies generally exist for the hunter to successfully fill their quota.

Chokes: Bring different chokes if your gun is easily changeable. Modified is most often the preferred barrel.

Shells: A 2¾” shell is most commonly used with # 5 shot. This is dependent on individual hunter choice and other shells such as #4 and #6 shot are fine as well.
